Working on a world as it is meant to be
Based on the believe we have the ‘borrowed’ the world, we handle valuable raw materials responsibly. We do this by returning materials to the chain in a sustainable manner. In this annual sustainability report, we provide insight into what drives us and how we made this concrete in 2024.
OUR MISSION
We value the world’s treasures and want to preserve them. That is why we roll up our sleeves every day. Jansen Recycling Group is an indispensable link in the metal recycling chain and works from the vision: ‘’Working on a world as it was meant to be’.
RECYCLING
Recycling ferrous and non-ferrous materials is our strength. We work with metal processing industries, scrapyards, traders, smelters and final processors. Our primary process and the impact we make looks schematically like this:
OUR VALUES: THE BIG 5
Core values are an ethical compass for the daily actions of Jansen employees. They reflect the identity of our company. It reflects the foundation from which we work and make choices. We stand by these values and are accountable for them. To create an appealing capstone for (internal) communication, the concept of The BIG 5 of Jansen was invented. They are not the five animal species you must have seen when you go on safari. But they are five animals that have a characteristic that supports the corresponding core value.
I. Service-orientated
Like the octopus with its many tentacles, Jansen unburdens the customer. We are strongly service- and customer-oriented. We pay a good price and ensure a quick settlement. We deliver high-quality material to our customers. We take care of every logistical challenge.
II. Responsible
Elephants have a very strong sense of responsibility for their peers and their young. At Jansen Recycling Group, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to clients and colleagues, the company and the world. So thanks to our core process, we keep valuable raw materials in the chain, while keeping the impact on the environment and its inhabitants to a minimum. We trade with integrity. Work safely. And point out unsafe situations of unsafe conduct.
III. Connected
No one is so adept at linking networks as a spider, connecting everything together. The spider maintains control over the entire web through feel and strategic positioning. That is exactly what we do at Jansen. We are connected with our surroundings and are always open for new partnerships.
IV. Committed
A dog is very committed to its boss. At Jansen Recycling Group, we are committed to each other and to our business relations. We love to learn and pursue improvement in everything we do. We show ‘commitment’ to the company and cherish the business in our hearts
V. Entrepreneurial
Beavers build dams in rivers and streams. These structures are often enormous. Even influencing the course of the river. The employees of Jansen Recycling Group think in terms of opportunities and possibilities. If necessary, they will beat a new path to find a solution. Our down-to-earth entrepreneurial mentality means we keep going long after others have given up.
OPPORTUNITIES
We work on our social responibility in several ways. We see a focus on this as an opportunity and an integral part of the company’s growth. More and more stakeholders also expect their contractors to pursue a responsible sustainability policy. Circular thinking and acting, transparency, insight and trust are keywords here.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
The management is ultimately responsible for CSR within our company. Human Resources (P&O) is responsible for matters relating to personnel and employee care. The safety policy, like the environmental policy, is the responsibility of our team who deal with Quality, Labour and Environment (KAM). CSR initiatives can be raised from all departments. For example, when it comes to cooperation with people with labour market disadvantage or the local community. Consider support for charities, school visits and volunteer projects. This also applies to monitoring working conditions in export countries, stakeholder communication and the mobility programme. Jansen Recycling Group considers it important that employees strive for a careful balance between people, planet and profit in all business decisions. In this way, CSR is increasingly blended into the day-to-day business.
ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES
We have set targets for all programmes in our management system. This system is audited annually as part of our external certification for the CSR Performance Ladder, among others.
As a family business, Jansen Recycling Group is focused on continuity. As a result of that focus, and as a consequence of our credo to ‘work for a world as it is meant to be’, our goal is to continue to grow in tonnage, turnover and profit margin.
In light of the same continuity, targets have also been set that have to do with the knowledge level of all employees. In addition, many objectives are aimed at reducing our environmental burden, such as:
– Aiming for 0 accidents.
– The satisfactory handling of all communication regarding (environmental) permits and any enforcement thereof.
– Reducing the CO2 Footprint by 2% per tonne converted in scope 1 and 2 compared to 2024.
For the latter objective, continuous research is being conducted into possible alternative fuels and generation from solar panels. After renewing the roof in 2022, the installation of 3,816 PV panels was completed in 2023. The commissioning was festively opened on 30 June 2023. Together with the 472 PV panels already in use, we are now generating clean energy with 4.288 PV-panels.
CARE FOR PEOPLE
Over the years, Jansen Recycling Group has been able to hire more and more employees. We have grown to several sites with 91 employment contracts. A good development, but growth also brings responsibilities. We continue to strive for a culture where people continue to look after and care for each other. We also believe it is important that our employees go home every day as healthy as when they came in in the morning.

PERSONAL AND INVOLVED
Our organisation is characterised by a flat structure: the distance between the shop floor and management is small. Having an open culture is important to us, with regular work meetings. We hold an annual progress meeting with everyone in which we look back at personal achievements and look ahead to the objectives for the coming year. Does anyone have any personal problems, private or at work? If so, they can report this during the work meetings and during progress interviews, or contact a confidential advisor.
A HEALTHY AND SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Healthy and safe working is an important issue for Jansen Recycling Group. In our daily work – when processing and storing and transferring materials – we have to deal with hazardous substances, working at height, fall hazards and machine work in an environment with sometimes high noise intensity. We continuously apply measures to eliminate or reduce risks.
EVERYONE FAMILIAR WITH SAFETY RULES
So it is very important that everyone in our company knows how to work safely and carefully. From the first working day, every employee is regularly made aware of these rules. This is done by going through the Jansen Recycling Group safety film with safety instructions followed by an additional presentation. This is part of the induction programme. The safety rules are also visible at the entrance to each site.
TOOLBOX MEETINGS
Toolbox meetings are held throughout the year, especially for site personnel. Here, they receive information on current safety aspects, work instructions for specific (high-risk) activities and information on new regulatory developments. We make agreements with operational staff and consistently report incidents and (near-)accidents. In this way, safety becomes negotiable and we work towards a safe working environment and the prevention of accidents.
HEALTHY AND VITAL EMPLOYEES
To keep our people vital and healthy, there is the possibility of undergoing a Preventive Medical Examination (PMO). Within Jansen Recycling Group, there is also an active stop-smoking policy to help employees quit smoking with the help of external counselling. Employees may still make use of this counselling.
SAFE DELIVERY OF MATERIALS
We also work as safely as possible when accepting materials. Our site employees actively point out to our customers that they are not allowed to deliver, for example, gas cylinders and other closed objects (in accordance with clearly communicated acceptance conditions), as this can cause dangerous situations during processing. We also check all incoming and outgoing materials via detection gates at the weighbridges. Finally, we carry out visual inspections to see whether any objects or substances are delivered that do not belong, such as asbestos. If this is the case, we consult the customer and dispose of the material in accordance with the applicable legislation.
HUMAN RIGHTS
With the increase in volumes of non-ferrous materials, Jansen Recycling Group started exporting to countries in the Far East and Middle East itself some years ago. Standards on working conditions are different there than in the West. We are aware of these aspects and the responsibilities this entails.
HUMAN RIGHTS CHECKLIST
We usually visit customers abroad several times a year. Here, we actively check whether working conditions are respected. If we see something wrong, we discuss it with the local owners. A Human Rights Checklist has been created for this purpose, which serves as a guide for reporting findings in a structured way. We record our findings in a report, which serves as a basis for planning a follow-up visit. Do we see abuses and does a discussion with the company management not lead to improvement in the short term? Then we exclude this buyer from further cooperation.
ANTI-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
Even for our own employees, we believe that human rights should be respected. In a country like the Netherlands, these matters are often already enforced by law. By complying with applicable laws and regulations, we respect human rights. We also expect temporary employees to respect our policies. Healthy, safe and fair working conditions are key.
We consciously and proactively do not discriminate between people based on age, gender, religion, race or orientation. We have formalised this in an anti-discrimination policy, which is part of the general terms and conditions of employment. In line with this policy, no reports of discrimination were received.
Fair business
We are convinced that acting with honesty and integrity always pays off. If not in the short term, then certainly in the long term. Traditionally, the scrap industry has not been characterised by things like honesty and transparency. We want to be the positive exception to this. For example, by paying our suppliers promptly and only on account. The fact that we want to act with integrity is also demonstrated by the fact that we have agreements with the tax authorities. On the basis of grown trust through openness and transparency, agreements have been made on reduced audit pressure. We publish our annual accounts with an unqualified auditor’s report on time every year. We also provide openness by publishing this CSR Annual Report.
Certaintity about the originen of materials
We train our employees to recognise and report suspicious materials. If we are not sure about the origin of certain materials and have doubts about how the provider obtained them, we call in the police.
CARE FOR THE PLANET
Taking good care of the environment is very important to us. Naturally, we contribute to this through our core business. After all, efficiently reusing scarce raw materials is at the heart of thinking about sustainability and contributes to a more circular economy.
CO2 REDUCTION PER PROCESSED TON
On balance, our CO2 footprint for scope 1 and 2 remained almost unchanged (2024 compared to 2023): a 0.4% increase. This is because there was an increase in scope 1 and a decrease in the CO2 for scope 2. The increase in scope 1 is due to increased diesel consumption in machinery. The decrease in scope 2 is due to the increased electricity we fed back into the grid. However, traded tonnage has been 15.3% lower in 2024 than in 2023.
The main objective for CO2 reduction is to achieve a two percent reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of turnover in scopes 1 and 2 between 2021 and 2024, compared to 2020 (for Scopes 1 & 2). This target was therefore not achieved.
The main objective will be reviewed, because the PV installation will now contribute for a full year, but at the same time, there will be increased consumption in hall 4 due to the investment in the new shredder with advanced post-separation lines.
NEW, EFFICIENT MACHINES
To further reduce CO2 emissions per processed ton, we have already taken a number of measures:
• Young equipment, which leads to fuel savings
• Most cranes are equipped with ERC technology
• Further redesign of the site (preventing logistical movements)
• Two electric cranes
Most of our cranes do not contain two, but three lifting cylinders. The third is a cylinder filled with nitrogen (N2) that is pressurised during the downward movement of the mast by the weight of the mast with grab. The energy stored in this way as gas pressure contributes to the upward movement of the mast with grab. This interplay of forces allows the 2 hydraulic cylinders to do their work with much less pressure and the engine to deliver the same capacity with less power (ERC technology).
Jansen Recycling Group has electric forklifts at the Technical Department. In addition to these lighter forklifts, heavier 5-ton forklifts were delivered in the spring of 2024.
LESS DUST EMISSIONS AND NOISE POLLUTION
Jansen Recycling Group keeps a close eye on dust emissions and noise pollution. Not only for the safety and health of our own employees and visitors, but also to maintain a good relationship with the environment. We understand that the sounds and dust can be experienced as a nuisance. To limit the nuisance, we have taken the following measures:
Restriction of dust emissions
• Continuous monitoring of air quality
• Spray and mist installations across the entire site
Restriction of noise pollution
• An 8-metre sound barrier that was largely increased to 11 metres in 2021.
• A wall of containers was built in various places (specifically tailored) to reduce noise
• Taking into account the operational output and material types
• Instructing employees to limit noise pollution
WASTE
Jansen Recycling Group consciously handles all waste or rather residual flows. This is achieved by separating these flows as well as possible and having them processed by certified processors.
PLANTING FOR AIR PURIFICATION AND INSULATION
In Vlaardingen, the walls of our office, the warehouse and the yard are provided with living greenery and the roof is covered with sedum. This green roof not only purifies the air, it also insulates well. Furthermore, the planting ensures the delayed drainage of rainwater, so that the sewer is relieved in the event of heavy rainfall. The roof covering also lasts longer because it is not directly exposed to the sun. In Dordrecht, too, work is being done to create more greenery around the yards.

IN-HOUSE WATER TREATMENT
Jansen Recycling Group’s yard in Vlaardingen is fully impermeable, while the yard in Dordrecht is impermeable where necessary. Impermeable asphalt means that no polluting liquids can penetrate the ground, thus preventing soil pollution. All liquids flow to a central point after which it is directed to our own water treatment plant. By using flocculants, it is then purified and discharged into surface water. Naturally, continuous monitoring is carried out to guarantee the required water quality. The water treatment and the impermeable asphalt are very costly measures, but fit the ambition to deal responsibly with our environment, including the environment.
EFFICIENT AND ECONOMICAL HOUSE TRANSPORTER
Our home transporter, Bas Kooij Transport BV, has a modern fleet where all trucks are equipped with efficient Euro 6 engines. Moreover, all drivers have completed the New Driving course. To avoid unnecessary transport movements, Bas Kooij parks some of its trucks and containers at our sites. For commuting, drivers use small fuel-efficient cars instead of trucks. Developments in electric and hydrogen driving are closely monitored.
CO2 SCAN
By supplying iron and metals to Jansen Recycling Group, suppliers enable the reuse of the material and valuable raw materials are retained. In addition, less primary (‘virgin’) metal needs to be produced from the mine, such as iron ore or steel or bauxite for aluminium. Recycling metals requires less energy and greenhouse gas emissions than producing primary metal from ore. By making recycling possible, we jointly reduce the climate impact of metal products. Metals such as zinc, lead and tin are expected to no longer be extracted from primary sources in 20 to 40 years. Recycling is therefore an absolute necessity. In addition, the production of new materials from recycled material provides enormous energy savings compared to extraction from the mine. Take aluminium: if recycled material is used to produce it instead of bauxite, no less than 95% less CO2 emissions and energy are required.
With the CO2 metal scan from Jansen Recycling Group, suppliers gain insight into the climate benefits achieved through recycling. This includes all recycling steps: emissions from transport, energy for recycling processes and climate gains from avoiding primary metal. The first CO2 metal scan was developed by us together with CE Delft, the most recent version was developed by CE Delft on behalf of the Metal Recycling Federation (MRF).

CARE FOR SOCIETY
Jansen Recycling Group is at the heart of society. This means that – in addition to caring for the environment and our people – we also want to contribute to the local community and society as a whole. For example, we believe it is important to maintain good relationships with our environment, suppliers and customers. In addition, we have committed ourselves to various charities.
THE FINANCIAL PICTURE
These key figures are taken from the consolidated annual accounts 2023 of Jansen Recycling Holding B.V., the parent company of Jansen Recycling Group B.V. These annual accounts include the figures of the operating companies that belong to the group. We closed 2024 with a positive financial result, which we are certainly satisfied with.
LOCAL INTERNATIONAL COMPANY
We work internationally, but feel connected to the place where we are located. Jansen Recycling Group is a local employer for many, with the vast majority of employees coming from the Rotterdam area. In addition, there are hundreds of suppliers who provide us with services or products. We source a large part from the local area. In this way, we have a positive influence on the regional economy.
SUPPORT FOR CHARITIES
Jansen Recycling Group donates to various charities, both in the area around our work area, nationally and abroad. In this context, multi-year agreements were made with twelve charities at the end of 2023. Among them International Justice Mission (IJM) and Mission Aviations Fellowship (MAF). We are also involved in the transport of relief supplies to Ukraine with our own trucks and drivers of Bas Kooy Transport.
YOUNG PEOPLE VISIT
Jansen Recycling Group regularly receives school classes to introduce young people not only to our company and the industry, but also to sustainability in general. This allows them to see and experience what a company in the recycling industry looks like and works.
“By showing students around our yards, they get a lot of impressions. Shears, cranes, large mountains of material. ” – Jansen Recycling Group
AFFILIATED COMPANIES
We are always looking for opportunities to develop or support additional activities. This can be in the form of purchasing new technologies or new machines within our company. But it can also be in the form of investing in companies. The principle here is that there must be or will be synergy between the companies concerned.
Bas Kooy Transport BV
In 2020, Jansen Recycling Group acquired the shares of Bas Kooy Transport BV (and affiliated companies that manage the equipment and also build scrap containers) from the former owner Bas Kooy. In this way, we have guaranteed the logistical strength for the future.
Dutch Harbour ’s-Gravendeel BV
For several years now, the shareholders of Jansen Recycling Group have also been co-shareholders in Dutch Harbour ’s-Gravendeel BV. This is a lay-up port – a kind of parking space for ships. Think of inland vessels, but especially seagoing vessels and pontoons. Floating equipment that needs to be demolished or that carries demolition objects can find a safe and protected shelter in this port, pending the actual execution of the demolition. In that phase of laying up, environmental studies and preparatory work are easily possible, pending the dismantling at Jansen Recycling Group or fellow companies.
